Business analysis tasks*

Task 1:

The businesses that have inspired me the most have been Warner Bros and Pixar because of how high quality their productions are, the visual storytelling to the animations these studios produce are really eye-catching and memorable for all ages, and I would like to be able to achieve the same quality of production with my business in the future. One idea I have that could potentially help my business get to where I want it to be is by collaborating, getting partnerships with other animations studios, and getting more exposure in both the industry and to the general public. The only thing I will avoid with my business is creating material that is considered inappropriate to the public as it would put a bad image onto my business and could result in my business failing or shutting down. This is both for the films that my studio will produce and for what my students will create when taking part in my animation school. I will make it clear that if they do end up creating anything inappropriate, my business is not held responsible for their actions and we do not approve of it.

5 key things I've learned about the creative industry:

  1. There are a variety of positions/job titles in film production companies, different teams for different areas of producing a film like a camera crew, makeup crew, prop and costume makers, VFX, and editors. For just the VFX team alone there are 18 different positions that are needed to create the animations and visual effects of a film.
  2. The best way to market your business is through social media as it's what everyone is using nowadays for everything. It's the best way to communicate with people, advertise your business to the world and make yourself heard. This can be just by having adverts appear in YouTube videos or Instagram feeds or creating social media pages where you can advertise and update people with your latest news and productions.
  3. Brexit and COVID-19 have made a significant impact on creative industries. Due to Brexit, it means that finding employees to work for your business who live/are from outside of the UK will be more challenging. And due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it meant that the creative industries had to shut down and stop their productions, members of staff had to work from home, which made things very difficult. When restrictions eased and people could come back to work, it still made things difficult as things like social distancing and mask-wearing had to be taken into account.
  4. The creative industry is a constantly growing sector in the UK economy, increasing the number of jobs there are available to the people of the UK.
  5. Creating a business in the creative industry can be very challenging as you need your business to stand out to the rest of your competition. One of the best ways to do that is by looking at what your competition is doing well and using some of their methods to your advantage.

The mission statement I found to be the most powerful was Warner Bros':

"Our mission is to make a positive impact on the world through initiatives that encourage youth to be storytellers, create access and opportunities for new voices, and drive sustainable production."

This is because it shows that they care about others more than themselves, they want to make a change in the world and create entertainment for everyone to enjoy. They want to inspire people to create their own stories to show and tell, become someone they want to be and be a part of their community and spread their stories to the world. I want my business to share the same goals as Warner Bros', but also with the exception of teaching those that aspire to become animators to work in studios such as Warner Bros.

The most effective branding identity I found was the logo for Pixar as they are one of the most recognisable studios for making memorable films and characters and for their iconic intro/logo. Every intro in a Pixar film starts off with the text logo appearing on screen and then the iconic 'Pixar Lamp' (A.K.A Luxo Jr.) jumping across the screen and squishing the 'i' in the Pixar logo. One logo that actually influenced mine was Warner Bros' logo, their logo has the initials of the studio name "W.B" in a badge shape, it's become a lot more simplistic yet still very effective and recognisable. For my logo, I've done the same concept by using the initials from my business, "Spline Studios" and having it inside of a shape.
